Maintenance of Traffic (MOT)

Intermediate Level

Course Objective:

  • Direct responsibility for placement of work zone traffic control devices

  • Direct responsibility for field maintenance of work zone traffic control devices

  • Inspection of the placement or operational function of work zone traffic control devices

  • Drafting or electronic generation of work zone traffic control plans

Initial Qualification Requirements

  • Must pass the written exam

  • Must take course and exam

  • Length of course and exam 16 hours

Re-Certification Qualification Requirements

  • Must have valid Intermediate Level Certificate

  • Must attend refresher course

  • Length of course and exam 8 hours

  • Must pass the Refresher exam



Advanced Level

Course Objective:

  • This training course is for personnel with responsibility or authority to decide on the specific Maintenance of Traffic requirements to be implemented.

  • The Engineer responsible for the work zone traffic control plan development;

  • The work zone traffic control Supervisor.

  • On successful completion of the Maintenance of Traffic Advanced Training Course the student will have a FDOT recognized 4 year qualification to perform work zone traffic control planning, design, implementation, inspection and/or supervising the selection, placement, or maintenance of traffic control schemes or devices in work zones.

  • Flagging operations will be covered in enough detail that a person who successfully completes this course is capable of providing basic training.

Initial Qualification Requirements

  • Must pass the written exam

  • Must take course and exam

  • Length of course and exam 20 hours

  • Experience in Work Zone traffic control is recommended but not mandatory.

  • Certification valid for 4 years

Re-Certification Qualification Requirements

  • Must have valid Advanced Level certificate

  • Must attend refresher course

  • Length of course 8 hours

  • Must pass the Refresher exam
